Chapter 9

After leaving beautiful, battered Marissa, Jared drove straight home. He could have definitely used a stiff drink right about now, but he’d entrusted his father’s care to Gus and he didn’t want to put anyone else out more than necessary.

When he walked into the house, Gus had gestured toward Jared’s sleeping father and gotten up quietly. He walked into the kitchen, motioning for Jared to follow him.

“Is everything okay?” Jared asked.

Gus flashed a wide smile. “I think he had a good time,” he said. “He’s plumb wore out now. How’s Marissa doing?”

“She’s home. Though she’s pretty banged up, she was really lucky. Her SUV is totaled, but she has no broken bones or serious injuries.”

“Thank goodness for air bags,” Gus said. He grabbed his cowboy hat off the back of a chair and put it on. “I guess I’ll be heading on out now.”

“Thank you so much for staying with him. I really appreciate it.”

Gus gave the sleeping J.J. a fond look. “No problem. He and I go way back. I hate what’s happening to him. If you need any kind of help again, just give me a call. Mildred and I can come over and visit with him anytime.”

“That’s mighty kind of you.” Jared walked the older man to the door. “Drive safely now.”

Once Gus had driven away, Jared felt too restless to sit and watch TV. Pacing, he just could not get past the thought that Marissa’s accident might have been deliberate. And while he couldn’t imagine Custer doing such a thing, the other man still hadn’t made a single attempt to call and apologize for standing Jared up.

Marissa might not think she had any enemies, but clearly she must have made at least one. First, she’d said she felt as if someone had been watching her. Then, her home had been broken into. A brick through the window. Threatening notes. And finally, a horrific car accident that could have seriously injured her or worse, ended her life.

If all of these had been caused by the same person, then Marissa didn’t just have a stalker, she had a crazed psychopath after her. Rayna needed to figure out who this person was. Because Jared couldn’t even imagine what kind of escalation would come after causing a major car accident.

Since it was still fairly early, he dialed Rayna’s cell. She picked up on the second ring.

“Don’t you think you’re getting ahead of yourself?” Rayna asked, once he’d outlined his thoughts. “First off, we don’t know for a fact that the accident was even related to all of the other stuff. It might have been a simple, unintentional hit-and-run.”

“But why would someone do that?” Jared argued. “They left without checking to make sure Marissa was all right.”

“It happens. Most often, the other driver turns out to have been intoxicated. Or have warrants. They always have a reason for leaving the accident scene.”

Jared grimaced, even though Rayna couldn’t see it. “Still, you’ll investigate it right? Because on the off chance that
